Date: Ongoing, councils can meet annually, monthly, quarterly, etc.
Where: Online or within health facilities across Southern Alberta
Patient Family Advisors (PFA’s) are valuable members to Alberta Health Services. The decisions made to improve health care come from hundreds of councils across Southern Alberta, and PFA’s sit on the councils and act on behalf of the patient. The volunteer will attend the meeting and provide their feedback, concerns, and ideas from a member of the public’s prospective. This provides a great opportunity to have your voice heard, as well as meet leaders within AHS and other volunteers.
We know from experience that delivering the best service starts with finding real ways to listen directly to the voices of patients and families.
This is why we:
•Ask for your input right at the points where healthcare is delivered
•Engage patients or families as advisors to us when we plan health services
•Ask for your perspective to help senior leaders in healthcare understand what matters most from the point of view of patients and families
Alberta Health Services wants to engage with and respectfully listen to patients and families. Having these meaningful conversations helps us practice what we value and increases our health system’s safety, transparency and accountability to Albertans.
These values are the very foundation of Alberta’s health delivery system now and our action plans going forward.
Ideally, the PFA will have had experience with health care (perhaps they are a caregiver or have used health services in the past themselves) and wants to make a lasting difference. The meeting times depend on each individual council; some councils meet on a weekly basis, however others may only meet annually. The council the prospective volunteer is placed with would just depend on the time commitment they are looking for and how involved they would like to be. Meetings can happen at any site and we are flexible for travel restrictions – there is the ability to meet at each health facility, or via online meetings dependent on the volunteer’s comfort level.
Due to meeting at health facilities or online, all meetings are wheelchair accessible and via any transportation.
All hours are tracked. Hours reports or references are available to the PFA as needed.
If you want to make a difference in health care, want to share your ideas and brainstorm with AHS leaders, we would love to hear from you.
