Position Volunteer Screening Program Assistant
Description This pilot program will take over the volunteer screening processes for participating organizational members, allowing the organization to focus on the other areas of volunteer management.
Screening practices help define the relationship between people and organizations and increase both the quality and safety of programs and services in communities. Screening considers the skills, experience, and qualifications that are required for an assignment and puts in place an ongoing process to engage people best suited to fill the role. It also allows organizations to explore the interests, motivations, and personal goals of applicants. The benefits of screening are threefold:
• To better match people’s skills and experience to the needs and opportunities in organizations
• To improve the quality and safety of programs and services in communities
• To reduce the risks and liability for both people and organizations (The Screening Handbook, Volunteer Canada)
Responsibilities Duties and responsibilities:
• Conduct research re: existing Canadian screening programs
• Review organizational files to identify most likely initial participating agencies
• Seek to understand the unique needs and current processes of potential/participating organizations
• Review and revise, if necessary, our current screening process
• Support development of internal processes/structures/documents of the program
• Develop a best-practices guide for volunteer screening in Lethbridge
• Participate in volunteer screening
• Create and execute a program communications & outreach strategy
• Participate in program outcome evaluation and refinement
• Keep a detailed database of contacts, connections, other pertinent information
• Co-prepare a pilot case study to provide internal and external learning opportunities
Qualifications To qualify, one must:
• Preferably have experience as a volunteer manager, but not required
• Be proficient in conducting primary and secondary research
• Foster and maintain relationships with stakeholders and partners and work cooperatively
• Be comfortable speaking in public (currently virtually); meeting new people
• Have superior written and oral language skills with a demonstrated proficiency in writing and speaking in clear, accessible, and compelling language
• Work in close co-operation with volunteers, community members
• Work under pressure, flexibly, with an entrepreneurial spirit
Benefits Mid-August 2020 to mid-February 2021 - (6-month employment contract)
Reports to the Event and Resource Development Coordinator (Project Lead)

The VL office is closed to the public until September 8 (tentative). The successful applicant will work from the VL office with appropriate adherence to occupational health and safety guidelines. The organization is monitoring the COVID-19 protocols continually, and the work environment (isolation, virtual v. in-person meetings, etc.) may evolve.
